S Khrystyne Keane

http://www.qrz.com/db/K1SFA

I consider myself very lucky -- as ARRL News Editor, I get to work with Amateur Radio all day. On the weekends, I get to get on the air. I usually operate from K1TTT in Peru, Massachusetts. I operated my first non-M/M contest  -- ARRL RTTY RU -- in January 2009 (M/S using K1TTY), coming in #6 W/VE and winning the New England Division Multi-Operator High Power category with a score of 162,540. I also participated in the 2009 BARTG Sprint (MO using K1SFA), setting the USA Record with a score of 462,672.

In 2009 -- my first year of RTTY contesting -- not only did I do the above, but I won the OK RTTY Contest with a score of 1,486,494. In the SARTG RTTY Contest, I placed #6 for SOAB and #4 for 20 meters. We placed #7 in the Russian WW RTTY Contest with a score of 946,85o and #4 in the SCC RTTY Contest with a score of 439,803. In all of these, K1SFA was the top USA station in the contest!

Look for K1SFA to do even better in 2010!

I'll also operating M/M (using K1TTT) in ARRL DX CW and ARRL DX SSB, CQWW RTTY, CQWW CW and CQWW SSB, as well as the NE England QSO Party (NEQP) and IARU World Championships. I also operate M/M from K1TT (using NE1C) for CQ WPX SSB.

I am Membership Manager for the #1 contest club in the USA - Yankee Clipper Contest Club (YCCC). I am also trustee for the Fr James P McCaffrey Memorial Radio Station (KB1RLY). I'm a member of the Laird Campbell Memorial HQ Operators Club (W1HQ) and the Newington Amateur Radio League (NARL).

73 and KB!!!

As a member of the Oakland ARES group, Jim responded to the Loma Prieta Earthquake (1989) and Oakland Hills Firestorm (1991) disasters. Subsequently, the group successfully championed a proposal to use post-firestorm, bond Measure I funds to acquire and install amateur radio equipment in the City's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and each of its 30 firestations dubbed the Emergency Communication Ham Operation (ECHO) system.  He worked with the group to gain RACES recognition and was instrumental in forging a formal Letter of Understanding (LOU) with the City of Oakland.

Most days, Jim can be found anywhere from DC to light from his shack, mobile or as DX. When not on the air, Jim practices law in downtown Oakland at his own firm: www.tiemlaw.com.

PAUL B WESLING

http://www.pdarrl.org/clubs/hpsvrc/wesling.html

Abstract/profile

In Christophe Léc uyer's book "Making Silicon Valley: Innovation and the Growth of High Tech, 1930-1970", it is clear that without ham radio, none of this would have happened -- the Santa Clara Valley would likely have remained an agricultural area.  "Silicon Valley" would have been in New York or New Jersey.  Paul Wesling will relive some of the developments from the 1930's, when local hams re-invented around the RCA patents on tubes, won Navy contracts during WW II, then developed the vacuum technology that became the cornerstone for vapor-phase epitaxy, the key technology for the transistor and planar IC processes.  Isaac Asimov said this was "the most important moment since man emerged as a life form,"

Perhaps with a bit of exageration.  Paul (KM6LH) was present at the dedication of an IEEE Engineering Milestone plaque in Palo Alto last spring on the 50th anniversary of the development of the planar process at Fairchild Semiconductor.  He is an engineering graduate of Stanford, and is communications director and editor/webmaster for the SF Bay Area IEEE.
